Colección: del autor, Nueva York El perro está efectivamente ante un dilema, pero el nivel de su comprehensión en estos menesteres, solamente llega hasta la tuerca y el tornillo. The dog is indeed before a dilemma, but his level in this domain only takes him as far as the nut and the bolt.
    LA CAJA DE LOS BROCHAZOS (THE BOX OF BRUSH-STROKES) 1989 Madera, alambre, pigmentos japoneses, tinta, hoja de oro, bambú, un motor eléctrico y tornillos. Wood, wire, wood-block printing japanese pigments, ink, gold-leaf, bamboo sheath, an electric motor and screws. Medidas: 18.5 x 18.5 x 10.5 cm. Colección: del autor, Nueva York Esta caja es un tributo al ‘mokuhanaga’, grabado japonés sobre madera. El círculo en el centro representa al ‘baren’, una herramienta forrada con bambú. Las formas de arriba son pincelazos que se mueven mediante un motor eléctrico. Cuando éstas están en movimiento, se oye un ruido desconcertante. Precediendo a esta caja hice una edición del grabado ‘El perro de Catemaco’ donde aparece un perro sosteniendo en su boca a un pescado bajo un cielo con pinceladas. Las dos pinceladas son las mismas que se mueven en la caja. Sobre la caja aparecen peces nadando en aguas oscuras bajo un cielo desconcertante. This box is a tribute to Moku-hanga (japanese wood-block printing). The round design in the middle depicts the ‘baren’ (a bamboo sheathed tool) and the upper shapes are brush strokes moved by an electric motor. When in motion, they produce a grating sound. Along this box I made a wood-block print called ‘El Perro de Catemaco’ featuring a dog holding a dead fish under a sky where the same brush strokes float. On the box the fish swim in dark water under a grating sky.
    PROVIDENCIA (PROVIDENCE) Xalapa, Ver., 1987 28 x 9 x 8 cm. 11” x 3”1/2 x 3”1/8 A new dawn, a rising mound. Behind the gorgeous lips, reality could be devastating.
    EL JARDIN (THE GARDEN) (LE JARDIN) Xalapa, Ver., 1988 30 x 20 x 18 cm. 11”3/8 x 8” x 7” Tropical cedar, brass, bone, paper, an hemiptera, glue, ink, oil paint, glass and blue sand from Rhode Island and linseed oil. What lay under a Zen garden, peacefully reflexive? It is better not to be indiscreet, not to profane.
    LAGARTHY-J Xalapa, Ver. 1997 25 x 50 x 25 cm. 9”3/4 x 1’7”3/4 x 9”3/4 Jewelry work by Eduardo Terrazas M. Tropical walnut, chicozapote, high temperature ceramic, cast silver, lead, a molar, string, steel wire, brass silver coated wire, gold leaf, ink, silk tissue, a pair of earrings and a pendant, an electrical lighting system, various glues, linseed oil and glass. A reptile stalks under the moonlight. A carnivore chews worm limbs. The ancient celt lays still with contained power. This box is made for a woman. Inside the silk-covered side drawer lays a pair of earrings and a pendant. When she wears these silver and hard-wood jewels, she is united with the art-object, with history, with time. The lizard shares its ancient instinct while the molar’s rotation, in its protracted back-lit atmosphere, radiates inner strength.
    ¨The turtle¨ A cigar box, paper, glue, stones, ceremonial thai gold leaf and ink. The turtle uses its square technique to lure its prey.

    EL PAJARO NEGRO (huevo de avestruz en vitrina) (THE BLACK BIRD) (Ostrich egg) Xalapa, Ver., 1995 23 x 23 x 30 cm. 9” x 9” x 11”3/4 Like the bird held in the snake’s gaze, I cannot shake off my fascination with this theme. The serpent will stalk the bird, will dream the bird, will eat the bird. There is no help for it. But now, behold this bird’s egg: it is the largest egg; the power of life, forever outliving death.
    BUSCANDO EL RETOÑO (huevo de avestruz en vitrina) (IN SEARCH OF THE OFFSPRING) (Ostrich egg) Xalapa, Ver., 1995 23 x 23 x 30 cm. 9” x 9” x 11”3/4 An offspring is always in great danger: it could be picked off by an owl, it could fall from the tree and get eaten by scavengers; it could starve if the mother fails, or be found by a stalking reptile. It could catch a fatal infection at the hospital, choke on candy, fall down the stairs, or even die during a cold night.
    HELIODORO (huevo de avestruz en vitrina) (Ostrich egg in show-case) Xalapa, Ver., 1998 23 x 23 x 30 cm. 9” x 9” x 11”3/4 The turtle knows that original emptiness is vital in order to reach the ocean’s depth. The lizard has its own truth, and although awesome, it cannot compete with the turtle’s reality.
    EL HUEVO (THE EGG) Xalapa, Ver., 1988 Ø 8 cm. Ø 3”1/8 My friend Murry Waldman sent me these snakes from China. I tried to make a worthy box for them. Only death can match a snake’s stillness, but that stillness is surprising, deadly. With a custom-made tool, a rod is extracted from the egg’s interior. Carefully then, each section can be rotated to uncover de snakes. One of them is guarding a bone.

  • SCULPTURES AS ALTARS

    Main altar at ¨Montaña Despierta¨, zen center, Xalapa, Mexico
    EL HACHA 2003 113 x 38 x 33 cm. Uno mas de los corazones del patriarca. En la oscuridad permaneció durante su última época. Entre tesoros y herramientas que necesita el alma para asegurar sus raíces. Su base recibió el paso de muchos pasajeros. Ahora emerge, listo para recibir el nuevo oleaje.

    2002 118 x 50 x 30 cm. Este altar está hecho con un fragmento de la túnica de un monje budista birmano. Haphong, un joven monje, estaba confeccionando el mandala de una bailarina tradicional. Estaba en su cuarto en Enzada Pegu, ciudad al Noreste de Rangún donde el clima puede ser caliente y húmedo. En las noches los gekos blancos hacen vibrar sus instrumentos sonoros mientras que permanecen pegados a los muros con sus dedos ensanchados. Para rematarle los filos a su mandala y forrarle el dorso, Haphong sacó de una vieja caja de kokutan una túnica y le cortó un pedazo. Fue entonces que se dió cuenta que ya tenía que regresar a su templo, por lo que rápidamente le cosió la fracción y se lo llevó bajo el brazo. En camino a su templo se encontró a Brahamishvaktya quien subido en un árbol sacudió energéticamente su palo de bambú y saltó como tigre a una piedra aledaña. Haphong, sin titubear, se alineó con la tierra y empezó a decir mantras que vibraban con los chacras ying del corazón y yang del estómago. Brahamishvaktya dio un gran paso circular y le sopló a Haphong en la nuca. De inmediato, el chi del monje se hundió aún mas en el dan-tien y su punto de encaje se movió lateralmente sobre la línea de los tonos azules. El mandala con su fracción de túnica seguía bajo su brazo. Como el canal del corazón pasa cerca de la axila, el mandala absorbió la reverberación completa del desplazamiento del punto de encaje. Con esto, el mandala quedó implantado con la azulosa memoria del viento que acaricia las estupas. Ahora, la fracción de túnica que estaba en la vieja caja de kokutan está aquí con nosotros. El soplo de Brahamishvaktya ha permeado el algodón y éste aún vibra. Pocas entidades, aparte de los caninos, perciben lo azuloso. Sin embargo, con la respiración embrionaria y dejando abierto el esófago lograremos hacer el vacío. Entonces percibiremos sentados frente al altar, los matices de los azules y la interacción armoniosa de las energías con la grandeza del cosmos.
